ABOUT THIS EVENT

In one of his last papers, Analysis Terminable and Interminable, Freud painted a somber portrait of the realities of analytic work and the limits of the talking ‘cure’.  While Freud did not directly address the role of masochism as a barrier to termination in his paper – focusing instead on the role of trauma, intense drives and powerful resistances that undermine the analytic endeavor – many clinicians appreciate how masochism can perpetuate treatments that have likely reached a maximal depth of exploration. In this presentation, we will explore the case of a 10 year analysis of a masochistic patient who is now frustrated with the process, but afraid to terminate due to concerns of losing an important relationship. How do we help patients, who have learned a significant amount about their inner world and interpersonal dynamics over the course of a lengthy treatment, but remain unwilling or unable to make meaningful changes in their life – turning passive into active - that would lead to greater satisfaction in their lives? How do we understand and work through analyses that become an uninterpretable re-experiencing of a problematic early relationship or when treatment itself becomes an obsession for an obsessional patient or a perverse lifestyle choice?
